Diamond Buying Tips this Holiday Season

The holiday buying season is officially in full swing! For many, jewelry is on the list. Knowing what you’re buying, what you’re paying for, what you should pay for, and what you don’t necessarily NEED to pay for, will help you immensely as you’re making your list and checking it twice.

Looking for diamonds? You’re not alone – it’s one of the most popular stones purchased around the holidays. When you head into the jewelry store, buyer-beware… it’s the salesperson’s job to upsell you. That you need the highest clarity diamond they sell.

Only an experienced, professional diamond grader will probably be able to tell the difference between a VS2 (Very Slightly Included) and an SI1 (Slightly Included) diamond. With your bare eye, you may be hard pressed to tell the difference.

So what does this mean? It could mean close to a $1000 savings on a 1ct stone, G grade near colorless. If you have any questions, give us a call and we can help you evaluate your purchase.

Are you in the market for a “fancy” colored diamond? Most likely, if your local jewelry store carries colored diamonds (yellow, brown, red, pink, green, etc.), it’s been treated to make it that color. Coloring a diamond makes it virtually worthless. Colored diamonds found in nature are less common, thus carry worth.

Stores are required to disclose whether or not they treat their diamonds. If they don’t offer up that information, make sure you ask.

Hopefully this helps you on your holiday shopping adventures! As always, please contact us if you have any questions.
